Have you read our funny plumbing stories article we recently just posted? Well, you should if you haven’t yet because this article we have right now will help prevent most of those horror stories from happening.
We get it, you sometimes get the urge to flush down things down the toilet which you sometimes consider as your garbage can alternative. It’s easy and convenient and you leave no trace of whatever it is you flushed. What you don’t know is that it can clog your pipes and… let’s just say you don’t want to reach that point.
So here is a list of things that are common causes of clogs. Remember to never flush these down the toilet:
Bathroom wipes or moist towelettes are becoming an increasingly popular bathroom accessory. However, despite the fact that they are marketed as “flushable” like toilet paper, these wipes have actually created clogs and backups in sewer systems in many cases.
Some experts claim that flushing tampons and sanitary napkins causes the majority of household clogs too. The reason is because cotton snags easily, and if your home’s plumbing pipes have any cracks, the cotton can quickly get caught in it. You should definitely never flush these down the toilet, regardless of how bad your period is.
Cigarette buts not only look nasty when floating in the toilet water, they are actually full of incredibly toxic chemicals that end up in the water supply. In addition, next time you’re thinking of flushing one tiny cigarette but, think of all the water you’re probably wasting.
Baby diapers are also things you should never flush down the toilet. Just because there’s poop in it, it doesn’t mean it belongs in the toilet. Diapers are made from toxic plastic that’s designed to expand when it comes in contact with water. When you flush these down, you know what happens next.
Your children’s dead goldfish is also something that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet. Why? It is wrong to flush a fish, live or dead, as this is how many harmful species get introduced to environments they don’t belong to… not to mention it is also cruel.
