Music, without it the world would be very different. Whether you realize it or not, music has a very big influence on everything. Class, atmosphere, even our moods or attitudes can be dictated or at least can be conveyed by the music we listen to. This is the same for movies, a good example is the horror genre in movies. When suspense is being built, the music becomes intense, building tension for what is about to happen. As I said, music is very important for all kinds of things.
That being said, I’m not here to talk about music and why we use it today. Instead, I’m here to talk about songs from Hollywood. Songs that have either been taken off the big screen and have made it big, or were popular enough to be featured. This may be because they were the iconic “theme” in a big Hollywood movie, or maybe the film got the song the publicity it needed to become what it was. Whatever the reason, these are some of our favorite tracks who made it big in Hollywood.
Kenny Loggins – Footloose
An upbeat track for the dancer inside you, Footloose gained popularity fast – both song and film. Being what it was, this a song you would need to be able to dance to. What’s a movie about dancing without some fun tunes to dance to?
Ray Parker Jr. – Ghostbusters theme
A true theme if there ever was one, the Ghostbusters theme is something that has lived through two centuries. The song was even updated with the reboot as opposed to being replaced.
Israel Kamakawiwo’ole – Somewhere over the rainbow
This song has been popular enough to be in a couple movies, most iconically The Wizard of Oz. It is a nice song which has been very popular for quite a while.
Celine Dion – My heart will go on
There is a good chance that you know where this one is from. Titanic, an iconic classic known to almost everyone which will likely never be forgotten.
Whitney Houston – I will always love you
This song, taken from The Bodyguard is quite romantic like our previous song. Whitney’s powerful voice is shown in all its’ glory through the chorus and the lyrics pair well with the movie.
Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke – Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
A mouthful in itself, this song comes from the heartwarming Mary Poppins. It is a very upbeat, cheery tune that’s made it into the hearts of many who have heard it.
Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer – Moon River
One of Hollywood’s most memorable songs from the 1961 hit Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The movie was based on the novel of the same name and was received very well when it was released.
Leigh Harline, Ned Washington – When You Wish Upon a Star
Pinocchio, one of the older Disney classics adapted from Adventures of Pinocchio. It is about a boy that… wasn’t a real a boy to start off with, though when an old woodworker wishes upon a star, dreams come true.
The Bee Gee’s – Stayin’ Alive
Saturday Night Fever gave us this gem. Another movie of dancing and having fun, starring John Travolta. This one’s for the disco fans.
Debbie Reynolds – Singin’ in the Rain
Another song that matches the title of its’ movie, Singin’ in the Rain is another classic this time from 1952. This one’s a spoof on the switch from silent movies to the ones with sound that we have now.
