Are motion activated lights a good idea?

December 5, 2018 By Elizabeth Leave a Comment

You might want to consider motion activated lights if you are looking to replace your porch lights. There are now many solar options available as well. There are a few reasons to consider these lights. Though the biggest reason we suggest them is for safety.

If you are not home and someone tries to break into your house, the lights suddenly catching them as they move to your door may serve as a deterrent. Further, the fact that their previously covert actions are suddenly brightly lit to the world may serve as a further deterrent. This works well with poultry houses, and animal pens to scare off predators. When they get close and the light flicks on they tend to bolt. Even if they do not, you should at the very least be able to see better what is going on.

The next big point is that these lights save a lot of energy and turn on for you when you approach the door. No leaving the light on all night which is bad for both your energy bill and the environment. Light pollution is causing a lot of problems and we are just now starting to learn some of those repercussions.

We also suggest that if it is an option where you need your light, to use a solar light. One of the nice things about the solar options is that anyone can install them without the need for drilling holes into the home. Also, these lights can be installed in places where you cannot install a hardwired light. Again, such as in remote location or even mobile animal pens. We have seen these used to great effect on chicken tractors and on the outside of sheds to deter villains. A bonus, these save you even more on your energy bill and help the environment further too. These small steps can make a huge difference for your budget in the long run.
