All those tempting treats in the windows; bagels, muffins, quiches, loaves of freshly baked bread, croissants, tarts, cookies, and the like. These mouthwatering temptations are difficult for even those with an iron will to resist. So what do you do if you have to choose among these tasty offerings but want to try to stay healthy? What if nutritional information is not available but you have to make a selection? This could be because of a work lunch, meeting a co-worker, or friend. Or possibly even a celebration that is taking place at the bakery. Or maybe you are just in a hurry and have no other choice but to snag our meal from the bakery.
Bakeries are amazing places and they do get a bad rap because most of us are trying our best to stick to healthier fair. So, we are not attempting to dissuade anyone from enjoying food at its finest. Rather, we aim to help you make a more health conscious decision should you face this dilemma. Do you choose the bagel or the quiche?
Some generalizations, which of course vary from place to place but are relatively safe bets are to go with english muffins. Keep in mind what you are topping it with, but generally english muffins are relatively healthy. Especially if they are made with whole grains and no added sugars. Top these tasty treats with a slice of ham, poached egg and avocado slice for a great start to your day.
Bagels are another mostly safe option. Opt for the ones made with whole grains if possible and again, keep your toppings healthy if you add them. Bagels are notorious for a reason, and that is because these iconic bakery treats can be healthy, filling, and convenient for those on the go.
