McCormick Observatory

Leander McCormick Observatory is open on the first and third Friday nights of every month (except holidays) year round. Visitors can view celestial objects through the historic 26-inch McCormick Refractor and other smaller telescopes (weather permitting), tour the Observatory, hear a presentation by an astronomer, and see the exhibits.

Often called the skinniest park in Virginia, Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad Regional Park is a paved trail between Shirlington and Purcellville, Virginia. Run, cycle or skate the 45-mile route along the former roadbed of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad, which runs through the urban heartland and into the Virginia countryside. Equestrians can ride the adjacent 32-mile gravel horse trail. The W&OD trail has multiple parking areas, enabling you to jump on and off the trail at various points.

Norfolk Botanical Garden is nationally recognized for its deep-rooted history and celebrated for its blooms in every season. The 175 acre garden is home to 53 distinctive themed gardens, including the World of Wonders, A Children’s Adventure Garden, a 3-acre garden where kids explore the connections between plants, international culture and the environment, all while having fun. They also have 95 species of birds and 40 kinds of butterflies. Their latest garden is the O’Connor Grain & Hop Garden.
